6:16 Israel of God. This phrase may refer to the newly constituted people of God, whose identifying mark is the Holy Spirit and not circumcision. Such people would include both Gentiles and Jews. But it could also refer to the “fullness” of Israel, the elect of the Jewish nation for whose salvation Paul was deeply concerned (cf. Rom. 9:1–5; 11:12, 26, 31).
