12:5 without blemish. Like the sacrifices of Israel (e.g., Lev. 1:3), the Passover lamb was to be without flaw. The idea of substitution is evident—the lamb died in place of the firstborn. Jesus, whose death was prefigured by the Passover sacrifice, is called the Lamb of God (John 1:29, 36; 1 Pet. 1:19; Rev. 5:6).
