Shimei. As a kinsman of Saul, Shimei may have held David responsible for the deaths of Abner and Ish-bosheth (vv. 7, 8; on David’s innocence, see 3:21, 26, 28; 4:9, 12 and notes). He may also have resented David’s permitting seven of Saul’s descendants to be executed by the Gibeonites (21:1 note). As a resident of Bahurim, moreover, Shimei may have been upset by David’s treatment of Michal, Saul’s daughter, for it was there that her second husband was ordered to cease following her as she was being taken back to David (3:16).
