1:26 surpassing the love of women. David’s praise of Jonathan’s love (cf. 1 Sam. 18:3) does not mean that love between friends is inherently superior to marital love. Rather, the point seems to be the astonishingly selfless quality of Jonathan’s love for David. David was himself not selfless in his relations with women (3:2 note).
