Jannes [Jăn'nēs]—full of pleasure, favor or impoverished. One of the two Egyptian magicians who withstood Moses (Exod. 7:11, 12, 22; 8:7, 18, 19; 9:11; 2 Tim. 3:8). The names of these opponents are not given in the Old Testament. Ancient Jewish writers expressed extravagant views on Jannes and Jambres, some affirming that they were the sons of Balaam, that they were drowned in the Red Sea or put to death for inciting Aaron to make the golden calf.
