I Have Overcome the World

23 (A)And on that day (B)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, (C)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 (D)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (E)joy may be made complete.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in (F)figures of speech; (G)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you openly of the Father. 26 (H)On that day (I)you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for (J)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (K)have believed that (L)I came forth from the Father. 28 (M)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and (N)going to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “Behold, now You are speaking openly and are not [a]using (O)a figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we (P)believe that You (Q)came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (R)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (S)you to be scattered, each to (T)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (U)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, so that (V)in Me you may have peace. (W)In the world you have tribulation, but (X)take courage; (Y)I have overcome the world.”

  1. John 16:29 Lit saying a proverb

But if any of you (A)lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and [a]without reproach, and (B)it will be given to him. But he must (C)ask in faith, (D)doubting nothing, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, (E)driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a [b](F)double-minded man, (G)unstable in all his ways.

(H)But the [c]brother of humble circumstances is to boast in his high position; 10 and the rich man is to boast in his humiliation, because (I)like [d]flowering grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with [e](J)a scorching heat and (K)withers the grass; and its flower falls off and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away.

12 (L)Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has [f]been approved, he will receive (M)the crown of life which the Lord (N)has promised to those who (O)love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “(P)I am being tempted [g]by God”; for God cannot be tempted [h]by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then (Q)when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when (R)sin is fully matured, it brings forth death. 16 (S)Do not be [i]deceived, (T)my beloved brothers. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is (U)from above, coming down from (V)the Father of lights, (W)with whom there is no variation or [j]shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of (X)His will He (Y)brought us forth by (Z)the word of truth, so that we would be [k]a kind of (AA)first fruits [l]among His creatures.

Doers of the Word

19 [m](AB)Know this, (AC)my beloved brothers. But everyone must be quick to hear, (AD)slow to speak and (AE)slow to anger; 20 for (AF)the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore, (AG)laying aside all filthiness and all [n]that remains of wickedness, in gentleness receive (AH)the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 (AI)But become doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his [o]natural face (AJ)in a mirror; 24 for once he looked at himself and has gone away, [p]he immediately forgot what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, (AK)the law of freedom, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this man will be (AL)blessed in [q]what he does.

26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious while not [r](AM)bridling his tongue but deceiving his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion (AN)before our God and Father is this: to (AO)visit (AP)orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained [s]by (AQ)the world.

14 And this is (A)the confidence which we have [a]before Him, that, (B)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, (C)we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother [b]committing a sin not leading to death, (D)he shall ask and [c]God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. (E)There is a sin leading to death; (F)I do not say that he should make request for this. 17 (G)All unrighteousness is sin, and (H)there is a sin not leading to death.

18 (I)We know that (J)no one who has been [d]born of God sins; but He who was [e]begotten of God (K)keeps him, and (L)the evil one does not (M)touch him. 19 (N)We know that (O)we are of God, and that (P)the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And (Q)we know that (R)the Son of God has come, and has (S)given us understanding so that we may know (T)Him who is true; and we (U)are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.
