¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian^(A) had seven daughters. They came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. ¹⁷ Then some shepherds arrived and drove them away, but Moses came to their rescue and watered their flock. ¹⁸ When they returned to their father Reuel,^[a](B) he asked, “Why have you come back so quickly today?”

3 Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,^[a] the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,^[b] the mountain of God.^(A)

Moses’s Return to Egypt

¹⁸ Then Moses went back to his father-in-law, Jethro, and said to him, “Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt and see if they are still living.”

Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”

¹¹ Now Heber the Kenite had moved away from the Kenites, the sons of Hobab,^(A) Moses’s father-in-law,^(B) and pitched his tent beside the oak tree of Zaanannim,^(C) which was near Kedesh.
