Sisera [Sĭs'eră]—meditation, battle array or sees a horse.
- Commander of the Canaanite army which held northern Israel in subjection. He was killed by Jael (Judg. 4:21, 22; 1 Sam. 12:9; Ps. 83:9). In his flight after battle with the Israelites under Barak, Sisera, overcome by fatigue, sought shelter in the tent of Jael, who treacherously slew him while asleep—the death prophesied by Deborah (Judg. 4:9). The most tragic aspect of the murder of Sisera is that of his anxious mother awaiting the return of her son. Jael’s cruel act broke a mother’s heart.
- One of the Nethinims whose descendants returned with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:53; Neh. 7:55).
